Anthony Joseph Baller and his "Big Boy" Benaries

Many of the photographs of Benary Giant Zinnias on this website were taken by our son, Tony Baller, as they were growing in his Belleville, Michigan Home Gardens the summer of 2001.  A strange growing season made it almost impossible to grow big Benaries outside of those areas where the water table was not high!  Tony & Shelly were lucky!  They could push a spade down 1-3 inches and hit moist soil!  This was a godsend to us this year.  They've worked very hard and thoughtfully on producing a great crop of Benaries for our Van Dyke Zinnia customers this year -- and I can promise you will not be disappointed!

See more Benaries at Tony & Shelly's Secret Garden Page!  If you like BIG ZINS, this is the tour you don't want to miss!!  The Editor from Country Gardens magazine brought her photographer to Redbud Farms in Belleville to capture the wonder of Tony's Benaries during July 2001.  See the story on the Zinnias at our Farm, appearing in their publication, Summer 2002.  Tony's Benaries will be there as will all the other Van Dyle Zinnias @ Redbud Farms.

Gip's Victory Row!

It was VERY late in the planting season....July 15, 2001... our hearts were broken, and our spirits were low.  Two full rows of our great zinnias were first washed out by torrential early summer rains, then if that weren't enough, a 6+ week drought then burned any sprouts that might have made it after the initial onslaught!  But Gip would not give up!  He went out and re-tilled the rows, made the small trenches to hold the precious seed AGAIN, and kept it weeded faithfully.  One August morning, I walked out to see the great, huge Benaries and Cactus Zinnias had bloomed!!!! I looked eagerly for evidence of good color, healthy leaves, and strong stems.  THESE ZINNIAS SURPASSED ANY WE HAD GROWN TO DATE!!    I had told many customers, "God is making us work very hard this season for our Zinnias," but oh, what a glorious reward for the effort!  These fine flowers will appear in the Benary Mix, Supreme Variety, and also the Cactus packs this season.  You will not find a more beautiful Zinnia anywhere!

The Lesson:  don't give up hope.  Adversity holds some surprises:  clouds with silver linings!
