Purple morning glories decorate the Farm's Garden Gate

"The calendar spills days like delicate sands in an hourglass, and each new morning holds a promise in its hands."  -- Flavia Weedn

Heavenly blue morning glories decorate the Farm's mailbox while purples and pinks cover the front decking.  Hummers love it.

Morning Glories creep into any gate, fence, mailbox post, or climbing place I can put them at the Farm.  Their perfect trumpet-shape and pentastar centers draw me to them each year, and I never tire of looking at them and their heart-shaped leaves I love so much.  To my delight, I discovered my family has planted Morning Glories back 3 generations at least.

We use this mix to cover a very old out building or shed that's part of the Farm's history and character.  I've trained them up simple strings attached to the shed with small nails and enjoy their unique show many mornings and evenings during the summer.  This one's a climber!  Lovely vines attracting hummers and large moths early mornings and evening time.

For twilight enchantment, plant them with the Moonflower vine, four o'clocks, and ground-creeping morning glories in a gentle cascade of tallest/largest to lowest/smallest flowers -- I like the Ensign morning glorys' cherry or navy blue, white, and gold flowers!  What a sight!  Seen on a summer's morning or evening, I completely understand the inspiration for the words, "This is the day the Lord hath made....let us rejoice and be glad in it."

Centers of all the plants named here have star-like formations.  At the Moonvine's center is a perfect pentastar! Stunning and almost breath-taking when first you see it each season!  Sold in packs of 50+ seeds per pack, $2.50 per pack.   Easy to establish as a year-after-year bloomer, as it readily re-seeds.  Packs contain some of EACH of the "glory-ous" seeds named here.

Morning Glory covers the old shed out back, attracting hummingbirds during the day; the white Moonvine's fragrance draws hawk and sphinx moths and other insects at night.  The twining vines provide good cover for the small birds who make their home in our shed each spring and summer.  I delight in walking outside at 7 a.m. to greet the day and my morning glories -- deep purple, heavenly blue, and the prettiest pinks!  We even had some palest blue and lilac in this year's batch!

  • Annual but easily reseeds!  (Four o'clocks, Ensign morning glories, large vining morning glories, moonvine - small to very large trumpet-shaped flowers that will attract moths, butterflies, and hummingbirds evening or morning)
  • Likes full sun (6 hours) to partial shade (north - east/ southeast is best)
  • Moist soil is best as it fades quickly if parched
  • Blooms mid-season through hard frost
  • 25+ seeds per pack

August 2004, Morning Glories thrive on the northeast wall of the shed. Good rain all summer caused them to spread wildly about!
